PHILLY SPACE GIRLS

What are we doing?

We're creating a fun, science-fueled summer camp for 8-12 year old girls in West Philadelphia.

WHAT HAPPENS AT SPACE CAMP?

Every week on Wednesday afternoons this summer at Christy Rec Center, two Philadelphia Parks Alliance staffers lead a group of West Philadelphia girls through a series of science experiements, educational games, art projects, group work, and physical activities.

Also, we provide healthy snacks.

Our goal is to get our girls fired up about the potential of science and math to solve real world problems, so we structure our lessons based on what our students are excited about. We turn their interests into tactile, fun-filled science experiments.

Why is this important?

As girls enter middle and high school, they're more likely than their male peers to be discouraged from pursuing science and math. It's important to get them excited about the potential of STEAM professions as they enter these formative years. We want these careers to feel real and attainable to our students.

WHY ONLY GIRLS?

Women are woefully underrepresented in STEAM professions and rec centers historically provide more program offerings for boys than girls. We seek to challenge both of these trends.

11.1% of physicists and astronomers are women. 10.7% of electrical or computer hardware engineers are women. 7.9% of mechanical engineers are women. 13% of all U.S. aerospace engineering graduates are women.

1% of engineers are women of color.*
