June 14th Unprotected Historic Treasures of Fairmount Park

from 15.00

Wednesday, June 14th, 2017, 5pm-8pm (Evening Tour) / Raindate: Thurs. June 15th

Unprotected Historic Treasures of Fairmount Park

Meeting place: You may join the tour either on the SEPTA Cynwyd train leaving Suburban station at 5.16pm and 30th Street Station at 5.21pm, or at the Wynnefield Ave. Station when the train arrives at 5.32pm (schedule correct at time of listing; check with SEPTA in June that it has not changed). If taking the train, purchase your own ticket in advance as required by SEPTA. —Terrain and Difficulty: Park trails and walkways, and neighborhood streets. Moderate. About 3 miles with good surfaces. Wear good walking shoes, and bring water and snacks to eat along the way. Either pre-register on-line in advance, or register at the beginning of the tour with cash/check.  Fee includes the cost of the walk, but not SEPTA fares and the concluding dinner.

Amazingly, there are a sizable number of historic treasures in Fairmount Park that are not protected by listing in the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places. Join Bob Thomas, who also serves as Chair of the Philadelphia Historical Commission, for a walk through the Park to beautiful but sometimes ignored buildings, sculpture, bridges and gardens which would benefit from this protection.  An optional dinner with a discussion on the work of the Commission, and of solutions to problems faced in protecting such gems follows at a café on the Ben Franklin Parkway.
