Philadelphia is home to over 10,000 acres of parks, encompassing everything from the massive Fairmount Park System to small neighborhood parks. As a result, over 92% of Philadelphia residents are within walking distance of a park, one of the highest rates of park access in the nation. Yet, despite this tremendous infrastructure, Philadelphia spends only $66 per resident on Parks and Recreation, a figure that is substantially less than other comparable cities. Many of our parks, particularly in our most disadvantaged neighborhoods, receive little to no maintenance. As a result, these potentially tremendous spaces are frequently underutilized. We want to change that.
