The Historic Bartram’s Mile

Starting Location: 51st St. and Grays Avenue

This walking tour visits the newly restored mile of Schuylkill riverfront, along with historic parts of Bartram’s Garden, with wonderful views of the Schuylkill River and Center City in the distance. Join Bob Thomas, who also serves as Chair of the Philadelphia Historical Commission for an interpretive walk through the Garden to the historic buildings, the obscure Newkirk Monument, the orchards and urban farm, and the new 56th Street Plaza. An optional dinner with a discussion the extension of the Schuylkill River Trail, and projected improvements along the Lower Schuylkill follows at a café on the along the trolley ride back through West Philadelphia to Center City.  Featured photo is of the new 56th Street Plaza.

SEPTA Directions: You may join the tour either on the SEPTA #36 trolley departing 5.07pm from the 13th and Market Streets Terminal, or points along the way, or when the trolley arrives at 51st St. and Grays Avenue at about 5.27pm. If joining us at 13th St, please arrive at least 10 minutes early. If taking the trolley, purchase pay your own fare as required by SEPTA. 

Terrain and Difficulty: Park trails and walkways, and neighborhood streets. Moderate. About 3 miles with good surfaces.

Additional notes: Wear good walking shoes, and bring water and snacks to eat along the way. Either pre-register on-line in advance, or register at the beginning of the tour with cash/check.  Fee includes the cost of the walk, but not SEPTA fares and the concluding dinner.  Limited of 30 participants.
